    Heroic Age

    America's First Believer

Ibrahim George Kheiralla, a Syrian Bahá'í who had settled in Chicago, began teaching classes there — historian Robert Stockman's research points to 5 June 1894 as the likely start date. Thornton Chase, who had encountered the Faith's name at the 1893 Exposition the year before, was among that first class and is named by the U.S. Bahá'í community's own history as America's first believer. 'Abdu'l-Bahá later gave him the title Thábit ("Steadfast").
